Prominent commentator Idriss Ali Nasser has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the arrest of activist Sylvester Namiwa, arguing that authorities badly misjudged their response and inadvertently elevated the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (Cdedi) executive director's standing by choosing to detain him.
The State has charged Namiwa with treason and publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm.
The charges stem from statements Namiwa allegedly made during an interview with Luntha Television that indicated there with change of presidential power in two months.
In a widely shared social media post, Nasser argued that Namiwa's now-controversial remarks, while lacking subtlety, ultimately amounted to little more than noise that would have faded from public memory almost as quickly as it emerged, had officials simply chosen to ignore it.
He suggested the wisest course of action would have been for authorities to let the comments pass without reaction, insisting that Namiwa's remarks were destined to be forgotten by the public within hours had no arrest followed.
Nasser was particularly critical of what he described as a lack of political maturity among those advising government's response, suggesting that Namiwa's detention has effectively handed him a badge of honour rather than a punishment.
He argued that Namiwa, an experienced and often provocative public commentator, would likely embrace the attention generated by his arrest, using it to enhance his public profile rather than being deterred by it.
The commentator went on to draw a pointed comparison with the treatment of former Anti-Corruption Bureau Director Martha Chizuma, referencing her controversial early-morning arrest, which similarly attracted widespread public criticism over the manner in which it was conducted.
Nasser suggested that both cases reflect a recurring pattern of overzealous conduct by officials he believes are more interested in projecting authority than exercising sound judgement.
His comments add to the growing chorus of public and political voices weighing in on the Namiwa case, following days of intense scrutiny over his detention, the treason charge now filed against him, and broader questions about how Malawian authorities respond to political criticism and dissent.
Nasser's central argument, ultimately, is one about restraint — suggesting that government officials undermine their own credibility, and inadvertently create political martyrs, when they respond to fringe or controversial commentary with heavy-handed enforcement rather than simply letting such remarks fade into irrelevance on their own.
Chief resident magistrate Austin Banda informed Namiwa on Monday that he faced two counts; treason and publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm, but did not take plea because the matter was being committed to the High Court.
