Grassroots football organisation Mpira M'mudzi Mwathu has handed over a generous K1 million donation to the Sports Writers Association of Malawi, as the body races to secure enough funding for its upcoming Annual General Meeting in Salima this November.

The cheque was presented on Sunday in Lilongwe, with MMM Founding Director Chimango Munthali praising sports journalists for the pivotal role they play in driving the development of grassroots and youth football across Malawi, and pledging his organisation's continued backing.

"It's important that the sports writers have an opportunity to interact, share new insights and network," Munthali said.

"As Mpira M'mudzi Mwathu, we understand how important media is in the development of an institution, the development of the game itself and the development of even an individual player in any sport. We feel obliged to support the sports journalist in any way we can."

SWAM General Secretary Wesysylas Chirwa expressed heartfelt gratitude for the timely gesture, revealing it will go a long way toward covering the costs of hosting the three-day gathering, scheduled to run from 13 to 15 November.

"We sincerely appreciate this generous gesture which will go a long way towards addressing some of the requirements for the AGM," Chirwa said. "We look forward to receiving more support from various stakeholders as we continue preparing for the AGM."

The donation comes hot on the heels of a far larger contribution from football giants Mighty Wanderers and club president Dr Thom Mpinganjira, who recently handed SWAM a whopping K10 million toward the same event.

Despite the welcome boost, organisers still have significant ground to cover, with the AGM carrying a hefty K51 million price tag that SWAM is determined to meet before journalists gather in Salima.
