Mighty Wanderers Football Club and its president, Dr Thom Mpinganjira, have donated K10 million to the Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) ahead of its Annual General Meeting, set to take place in Salima from 13 to 15 November 2026.

Dr Mpinganjira contributed K5 million in his personal capacity, with the club matching the amount to bring the total donation to K10 million.

Speaking at a cheque handover ceremony at Lali Lubani Road in Blantyre, acting Chief Executive Officer for Wanderers, Welloce Kachingwe, said the club recognised the role sports journalists play in the development of football in Malawi.

"It is the sports journalists that make people know whatever is happening in the beautiful game of football. We felt this was the right time to partner with these sports writers by injecting some funds towards their forthcoming AGM," Kachingwe said.

"Our president has passion for sports and he felt obliged to see the AGM take place. This marks the beginning of a working relationship that will see the two sides working together even in future."

SWAM President Mphatso Malidadi welcomed the donation, describing it as timely.

"We are so grateful for this gesture. This amount will help in making our AGM a success. We were supposed to have this AGM in October but we have shifted it to November because we still need more funds. We know Dr Mpinganjira as someone who values sports journalists," Malidadi said. "Let me encourage more organisations and companies to come forward and partner with us because our budget is at K51 million."

The AGM will also commemorate World Sports Journalists Day, with journalists set to be trained on a range of sports journalism issues by experienced facilitators.
