Zambian police have swooped on a staggering 19 Malawians allegedly caught attempting to smuggle more than 5,400 litres of petrol across the border into Malawi — a dramatic bust that exposes just how desperate the country's fuel crisis has become.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba revealed the scale of the operation, confirming officers in Lundazi intercepted 13 Malawians transporting a staggering 4,500 litres of petrol, crammed into plastic containers and loaded onto a convoy of vehicles.

In a separate sting, police in Chipata swooped on six more Malawians alongside four Zambian nationals, seizing a further 905 litres of petrol — once again stashed in plastic containers in a bid to dodge the authorities.

Mweemba confirmed the entire smuggled haul had been destined for Lilongwe, the Malawian capital at the very heart of the nation's ongoing fuel nightmare.

Background: a crisis driving Malawians to extreme measures

The dramatic smuggling bust comes as Malawi battles one of its worst fuel shortages in years, with chronic queues at filling stations across the country forcing desperate motorists, commuters and transport operators to seek fuel by any means necessary.

The crisis has already sent official transport fares spiralling, with commuters on some routes now paying double what they were just weeks ago, while black market petrol inside Malawi has reportedly been fetching prices as high as K20,000 per litre — a staggering markup that has made cross-border smuggling an increasingly tempting, if illegal, lifeline for struggling Malawians.

The shortages have been largely blamed on Malawi's severe foreign exchange crisis, which has left the state-owned National Oil Company of Malawi scrambling to secure new supply deals and alternative payment arrangements with international fuel suppliers, as the country's dwindling dollar reserves make it increasingly difficult to pay for fuel imports through conventional channels.

With legitimate supply chains under such strain, cross-border smuggling operations like the one uncovered in Zambia's Eastern Province are likely to become an increasingly common — and increasingly risky — feature of Malawi's ongoing energy crisis.

Malawi opposition leaders savage govt's economic record

Malawi's president and his opposition spent the week disagreeing, more or less, about a single number: the price of maize. Peter Mutharika, marking a year back in office, cited its fall from over K100,000 to around K35,000 a bag as proof his "4Fs" agenda — food, fuel, forex, fertiliser — was working. Opposition leader Simplex [...]
