Renowned Malawian entrepreneur and project developer Jones Yamikani Chadza has announced plans to launch a digital technology-based transport platform aimed at improving commuter safety and modernising Malawi's mobility system.
In an exclusive interview, Chadza said Pita-GO is a newly registered, homegrown initiative designed to connect passengers, drivers and transport operators through a safer, more convenient and efficient network.
"Pita-GO was born out of the need to respond to the changing world and the modern movement of people and goods.
"We looked at security challenges, especially with the growing number of motorcycles on our roads, where riders are sometimes attacked by criminals posing as customers," said Chadza.
"We want to put in place a system that tracks movement, ensures accountability and guarantees safety for both the rider and the passenger."
The platform will also provide delivery services for food and other goods, helping to decongest cities and reduce long queues in commercial areas.
According to Chadza, the company is already engaging key stakeholders including the Malawi Police Service, the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) and MACRA to ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
"We are in communication with the Malawi Police and the traffic department. What remains is to sign Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). They will be our key partners when it comes to enforcement and emergency response," he said.
He added that only compliant drivers and riders will be allowed to register on the platform, with strict verification of driving licences, roadworthiness and other legal requirements.
On payments, Pita-GO will introduce cashless options including mobile money, Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba and a dedicated Pita-GO card.
"Passengers will load money onto the card and upon completion of a trip or delivery, the system will automatically deduct the fare. This is the direction the modern world is taking and Malawi cannot be left behind," Chadza said.
He said the innovation will also support the tourism sector by providing smart, reliable transport for visitors and for people who need safe movement at night.
"Pita-GO will start in Lilongwe and will expand to other tourism hotspots like Salima and Mangochi. When a motorcycle operator is registered with Pita-GO, he is safe because we can monitor his location. No one can steal his motorbike and passengers are also guaranteed security," he said.
Pita-GO is currently in its development and implementation phase. Details regarding its official launch, pilot operations and service availability will be announced in due course.
