Muluzi looks to wartime Kyiv for lessons in national resilience

When opposition politicians seek inspiration for domestic policy, war zones are rarely the first destination on the itinerary. Yet United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi has returned from Kyiv offering precisely that: drawing an explicit parallel between Ukraine’s wartime endurance and the economic challenges facing Malawi.

Writing on social media following his attendance at the Platform for African Democrats (PAD) summit in the Ukrainian capital, Muluzi argued that Malawi could "borrow a leaf" from a country currently facing an existential struggle.

' Existential crisis'

"When a nation faces an existential crisis, what does it do? It comes together. It innovates. It finds solutions," Muluzi wrote, praising the "extraordinary circumstances" under which Ukrainians have demonstrated resilience.

The comparison is a bold political maneuver. Malawi is not engaged in armed conflict, but the southern African nation has been grappling with severe structural headwinds, including chronic foreign exchange shortages, rising inflation, and persistent cost-of-living pressures.

By framing these domestic difficulties alongside a major geopolitical crisis, Muluzi is attempting to pivot the local political conversation.

His message suggests that Malawi's current difficulties stem not merely from policy missteps, but from systemic institutional failures that require a national, unified response.

 Turning crisis into innovation

For Muluzi, Ukraine’s appeal lies in its operational adaptability under pressure. His central argument is that resilience should not be viewed merely as passive endurance, but as a catalyst for innovation and systemic reform.

"Ukrainians have demonstrated this spirit," he noted, urging Malawians to turn "desperation into determination, crisis into innovation, and adversity into a reason to build a better future."

 A strategic pivot

The timing and tone of Muluzi’s statements carry clear domestic political weight. By positioning himself as an internationalist capable of drawing lessons from global conflicts, the UDF leader seeks to present a distinct vision of governance ahead of broader political contests.

However, translating the existential unity of a nation under military invasion to a country battling economic stagflation presents obvious political challenges.

Critics may argue that comparing Malawi’s economic woes to Ukraine’s active war zone overstates the immediate comparison.

Nevertheless, Muluzi’s comments highlight a growing trend among African opposition leaders: leveraging international platforms to critique domestic performance and frame national reform as an urgent necessity rather than a routine political debate.

Success, on Mutharika's own terms — and the terms nobody else is quite using

There is a particular rhetorical move politicians reach for when a year has gone neither brilliantly nor badly, and Peter Mutharika reached for it with real fluency on MBC this week: the rollercoaster. It is a useful word, because it promises motion without committing to a direction. Things went up. Things went down. You, the [...]
